Master Bedroom Makeover
Before our master bedroom makeover, I’d been wondering what to do to our master bedroom for a while. When we moved in, I chose to have it painted in Sherwin Williams Krypton. I didn’t love the color in that space. We had more of a farmhouse aesthetic for a while, then I changed things up. There was still always something missing to me in that massive room.
I felt like no matter what I did, it just wasn’t pulled together and cohesive. I put pictures on the wall, but they just felt stuck up there. The long, massive walls were hard to deal with for me. Our mismatched furniture probably contributed to this, but you know by now, I don’t do matchy-matchy. I love having different pieces work together and don’t typically choose to have things perfectly symmetrical.
I was finally ready to just go for it and change things up. It took me a while to get my confidence in tackling this room, especially since we had paid someone to paint it!! But, I got over that and got started gathering ideas. I should add that this was a BUDGET makeover, so I used and redid a lot of things we already owned.
I started out by pulling some things together in a vision board. I knew I wanted a neutral wall, and was leaning toward whites, creams and light beiges. An accent on the far wall as a focal point was a must. Deep greens, grays, black and gold accents had a soft place in my heart. I was annoyed at our crowded nightstands, so I wanted to free up space by using sconces for lighting.
Paint Color
I chose Sherwin Williams Alabaster, which I used in both bathrooms and the hall. It’s a warm and creamy white—not stark. I also considered Dover White, which is a little bit creamier and would have been lovely, too.
I wanted to incorporate some moodier tones, too, so I settled on a mid green gray for the wainscoting.
Board and Batten
After staring at the same wall for five years, I finally decided to add some interest to one of our walls with some DIY board and batten. I used much of the same materials and technique I used in our no nails shiplap wall, and you can read about all the specifics here.
The lower portion of the wall was painted a dark color (Station Gray) , and I have to say, I love using green as a neutral.
Above, on either side of the window, I added an easy-build ledge shelf with a mix of art prints and a diy large abstract art piece I made from an old canvas.
Lighting
One of my must-haves for this room was sconces for beside the bed. I went back and forth between black and brass and swing arm vs. fixed globes, but price ultimately determined which I chose. Most pairs of sconces I looked at were $100/set, but I found a great option on Amazon for $50/set. They are black with brass accents and have great style. They were relatively simple to install. You can hard-wired them in, but I chose to just use the plugs.
Under each sconce, above the nightstands, I have some 5-minute bold art prints.
Furniture
We didn’t purchase any new furniture, but I totally redid a nightstand and dresser, using a bone inlay stencil on the and new paint and hardware for the dresser. I repositioned the hardware holes to fit the new drawer pulls, and used a mix of modern gold cylinders with leather pulls I made myself for just a few dollars. Now I can hardly recognize these pieces!
Bedding
I switched out our pink coverlet for our old beige quilt, so a FREE update there! It’s more greige, actually, and has a small white with greige pattern on the back. I love using something that’s reversible, because it looks really good when the bed is turned back. It also makes it easy and fun to mix it up when you change the sheets. I can’t really decide how I like it best.
Shop your House
I may do an entire post on this, but if you’re on a budget, this is a great way to outfit a room without spending a dime. I picked up things around the house (both currently using and not using) in other places and brought them in to style everything. Some things stayed, others didn’t, but the ones that stayed were things that I loved MORE in this room than where they were.
I spray painted a silver lamp metallic gold, so it went a little better in the room. Basically, I grabbed anything that I thought MIGHT go in the room and brought it in there. From there, I decided what would stay and what would go. Think about moving things around that were already in the room and find a new spot for them. I updated the nightstand and dresser by painting, and created some easy and high-impact abstract art for the wall from an old canvas. I also made 5-minute black and white geometric art prints, and have tutorials for both that ANYONE can do!
FYI, I did not buy ANY new furniture, art or accessories for this room!
Shelving
I made my own ledge shelf for the wall to the right of the window. I love that I can easily and quickly change out prints, photos and decor without leaving any nail holes! A ledge shelf is a modern way to display art and something anyone (and I mean ANYONE) can make. I detail the whole process in a blog post and I plan on making more for our home already.
Your Dream Room
In designing your ideal room, address a few things that will make your life better and easier, along with some things that will make your space more beautiful.
Our existing nightstands were overcrowded, so I chose sconces to free up table space. I wanted a place to display more art and photos, so I made a shelf and eliminated unnecessary lamps. I knew I wanted a modern, cozy aesthetic, and dreamed of a bright, airy room with some darker, moody accents. There are still things I can think of that I’d like to do in the master bedroom.
I feel like I achieved what I was going for in this master bedroom makeover. I also enjoy the fact that spaces in your home are fluid and can keep changing as you find and develop new things you love.

Romabio Velatura Mineralwash
I can't remember the first example of fluted wood furniture I saw, but it was probably either this gorgeous custom wood bathroom vanity from Chris Loves Julia , or the DIY fluted coffee table Fariha shared on Pennies for a Fortune . The custom cabinetry was done professionally using a router for each line, which isn't something I possess the skills to do. This did help inspire the colors I used in our bathroom remodel, though! I really connected to the method Fariha used to build the coffee table--wooden dowels. What a fabulous idea!
I did a little refresh in our daughter's room, and I decided we needed some large-scale art. I actually planned to order a print, but inspiration struck on a trip to HomeGoods when I saw two HUGE framed canvases on clearance for $25 and $9. I grabbed them up and headed home, with my head filled with ideas on what to do with them.
I love peel-and-stick wallpaper so much! It's an easy, DIY fix for any space that just needs a little refresh. Because it's easily removeable, I feel much more confident going ahead and choosing a pattern. I struggle to commit to traditional pasted wallpaper--I think it's because we removed so much of it when we bought our house. It is no easy task. Peel-and-stick is also very economical, so if you decide to change it up a few years down the line, it doesn't feel so bad. I've now put it in four areas of our house. Today, you'll see the kitchen and den. It's the same pattern in different colors. I love how much the simple pattern really just makes each space.
