Easy Recycled Abstract Art

Apr 27, 2020
I found myself needing some large-scale art for a master bedroom makeover, and there wasn’t anything left in the budget for buying a piece. I had to get creative, so I decided to create my own easy abstract art.

Recycle & Upgrade

I am always buying things at for our house that I don't necessarily love, especially for the long term, but that I might be able to use in another way later.  I like finding things I like the shape or size of, or maybe even just the frame.

I bought a large, 2″ thick 20×20″ canvas at Hobby Lobby on sale for $10.00. It was a print of a buffalo in a landscape that I just never found a place for and I wasn’t really crazy about. It was a good size and great candidate for redoing.

Add Texture

I used this same method for my DIY styling boards for flat lay photos.

I used a little bit of drywall mud do add texture to the canvas. You can buy a small tub at Lowe’s. You don’t have to buy it in bulk; it’s near the painting supplies. You just get a small trowel to scoop it onto the canvas and spread it like icing all over the front and edges of the canvas, leaving some areas thicker than others. Remember, you WANT irregular texture.

The mud will also make it easier to paint over the existing print and keep it from showing through.

Once it was dry, I painted one coat of Sherwin Williams Alabaster on top. I used it because it was on hand and the same as the wall color. You can let it dry overnight, but on a 90-degree day outside, it just took a few hours.

Abstract Pattern

I chose to use neutral colors for this piece, and felt like a bold, black pattern would be perfect. I kept it a large-scale design, instead of doing something smaller, so it was a major focal point for the wall and entire room. I used black acrylic paint and a flat paintbrush to do everything. I did a couple of irregular loops, going off the page on both sides in a thick, bold line.

I used a fairly dry brush to create some lighter strokes mirroring the same bold loops, also going off the page. Then, I added more round loops going the opposite direction off the corners. I put some large dot patterns in several areas, layering them over the loops. I used the end of the paintbrush to add smaller dots in areas.

There are no rules in creating your own art, but if you want to make easy abstract art, pick out your color palette before you start. That way, you have an idea of what you’re going for. Adding texture can really enhance a piece and make it look more professional. Don’t skip this step. My best advice is to work slowly and take a step back after each addition. Loose, organic shapes don’t have to be perfect, and geometric shapes can also create a fun pattern. Most of all, have fun with it and hang your easy abstract art with pride!

I can't remember the first example of fluted wood furniture I saw, but it was probably either this gorgeous custom wood bathroom vanity from Chris Loves Julia , or the DIY fluted coffee table Fariha shared on Pennies for a Fortune . The custom cabinetry was done professionally using a router for each line, which isn't something I possess the skills to do. This did help inspire the colors I used in our bathroom remodel, though! I really connected to the method Fariha used to build the coffee table--wooden dowels. What a fabulous idea!

I did a little refresh in our daughter's room, and I decided we needed some large-scale art. I actually planned to order a print, but inspiration struck on a trip to HomeGoods when I saw two HUGE framed canvases on clearance for $25 and $9. I grabbed them up and headed home, with my head filled with ideas on what to do with them.

I love peel-and-stick wallpaper so much! It's an easy, DIY fix for any space that just needs a little refresh. Because it's easily removeable, I feel much more confident going ahead and choosing a pattern. I struggle to commit to traditional pasted wallpaper--I think it's because we removed so much of it when we bought our house. It is no easy task. Peel-and-stick is also very economical, so if you decide to change it up a few years down the line, it doesn't feel so bad. I've now put it in four areas of our house. Today, you'll see the kitchen and den. It's the same pattern in different colors. I love how much the simple pattern really just makes each space.

Just for fun, here's a freebie--a digital download for some fall wall art! This quote is from Anne of Green Gables. I still want to read the book, but I was a huge fan of the series Anne with an E on Netflix. Just click on the file, download it and print it at home or send it to a place like Office Depot. Happy October!
