DIY Leather Drawer Pulls

Apr 27, 2020
Leather accents are everywhere in home design. I see leather upholstered stools tucked under kitchen islands, cognac chairs and couches, and even on furniture. An easy way to update your existing furniture or cabinets is to make your own DIY leather drawer pulls at home.

Supplies

·      Piece of sturdy leather

·      #10 brass screws

·      #10 brass washers

·      #10 washers

·      #10 bolts

·      Utility knife

·      Pen

·      Leather hole punch

·      Ruler or tape measure

Steps

First, you’ll need to cut your leather into even strips. You can use your ruler or straight edge to mark the line with a pen, then cut the leather with the utility knife. Your strip need to be long enough that you can grip them when they are looped around so they actually function as drawer pulls.

Fold the leather strip in half, put the brass washer on the top portion of the leather where you’ll attach it. Mark the center with a pen. This is where you need to put a hole through both layers of leather (for the screw to go through).

If you’re smart, you’ll use a leather hole punch for this. However, I did not have this tool, and I didn’t have any luck drilling a hole in it, so I had to get creative. I’m a little embarrassed to say what I used to make the holes, but I used a cuticle nipper and just snipped away until I had holes. It wasn’t pretty, but it got the job done.

Putting it Together

Fold the leather strip in half, with the holes lining up, one on top of the other. Put the brass washer over the hole, then thread the brass screw through the washer and both layers of leather.

Then, put the screw through the hardware hole on your furniture. You’ll need to put a flat #10 washer on the back, then the nut on top of that. Tighten the front screw with a screwdriver until it’s secure.

I choose to just get silver washers and nuts for the back of the hardware, because it was cheaper than the brass ones. It didn’t really matter for them to be brass since they were on the inside of the drawers and no one will ever see them. It cost me less than $10 for the leather and hardware to make 3 leather drawer pulls.

Dresser Makeover

I used three leather drawer pulls on my dresser makeover, and mixed them with modern brass knobs on the lower drawers. I love the mix of hardware and it totally transformed the dresser. You can easily update a piece of furniture with these DIY leather drawer pulls.

I'm happy to say these drawer pulls have held up well for months, so they are very durable!

I can't remember the first example of fluted wood furniture I saw, but it was probably either this gorgeous custom wood bathroom vanity from Chris Loves Julia , or the DIY fluted coffee table Fariha shared on Pennies for a Fortune . The custom cabinetry was done professionally using a router for each line, which isn't something I possess the skills to do. This did help inspire the colors I used in our bathroom remodel, though! I really connected to the method Fariha used to build the coffee table--wooden dowels. What a fabulous idea!

I did a little refresh in our daughter's room, and I decided we needed some large-scale art. I actually planned to order a print, but inspiration struck on a trip to HomeGoods when I saw two HUGE framed canvases on clearance for $25 and $9. I grabbed them up and headed home, with my head filled with ideas on what to do with them.

I love peel-and-stick wallpaper so much! It's an easy, DIY fix for any space that just needs a little refresh. Because it's easily removeable, I feel much more confident going ahead and choosing a pattern. I struggle to commit to traditional pasted wallpaper--I think it's because we removed so much of it when we bought our house. It is no easy task. Peel-and-stick is also very economical, so if you decide to change it up a few years down the line, it doesn't feel so bad. I've now put it in four areas of our house. Today, you'll see the kitchen and den. It's the same pattern in different colors. I love how much the simple pattern really just makes each space.

Just for fun, here's a freebie--a digital download for some fall wall art! This quote is from Anne of Green Gables. I still want to read the book, but I was a huge fan of the series Anne with an E on Netflix. Just click on the file, download it and print it at home or send it to a place like Office Depot. Happy October!
