DIY White Hobnail Lamp

The Fox Hunt Lamp
The fox hunt lamp has been in my house for years. It was my husband's when we got married and it really looked good in his house, but I've moved it around from room to room here and never landed on a place where it looked right. It's a cream-colored ceramic base with a scene of a fox hunt on it. It has a pretty, angled black shade. It's really a nice lamp, so I hated to get rid of it, but it's just not my style and has never been living its best life here.
Inspiration
Ah, the inspiration. I find SO much inspiration, but it doesn't always strike like this one did. As soon as I saw the Instastory from Blesser House, I knew just what I wanted to makeover. I already made a gazillion butterfly studies from her free printable and tutorial
on her blog. She showed this giant vase
she found at a thrift shop that she totally transformed with these little half-circle wood beads and spray paint. I was blown away, but I immediately thought of the fox hunt lamp!
How To
This is almost so easy you don't even need a tutorial, but I will share my process, in case you want to recreate. I bought some half-circle (well, really sphere) wood beads on Amazon, super glue and white spray paint. It's in the middle of the Coronavirus pandemic, so I'm ordering everything. I was so excited when the beads and spray paint got here, I could hardly wait to start.
You just start super gluing the beads on the surface of the lamp (or vase) in even rows. Mine are spaced about 3" apart. Go around the whole lamp, making sure everything looks pretty even. I just eyeballed this; I didn't measure.
Once the half-spheres are glued on, take it outside and spray paint it in thin coats. I had a can of cream spray paint in the garage, so I decided to start with that. It took several coats to cover the hunt scene on the lamp, so don't get impatient. Also, I checked my Amazon and the white can wasn't coming for a few weeks. I actually LOVED the cream, so I am totally happy with my choice, but I still want to do this on something else in white. I have tons of the half-spheres, so I can glue them on everything! haha
Musical Lamp Shades
After the paint dried, I brought the lamp back inside and it was done! I initially put the black shade back on, but later played musical lamp shades in the den and switched them around and I love the new look!
Pin for Later!
I can't remember the first example of fluted wood furniture I saw, but it was probably either this gorgeous custom wood bathroom vanity from Chris Loves Julia , or the DIY fluted coffee table Fariha shared on Pennies for a Fortune . The custom cabinetry was done professionally using a router for each line, which isn't something I possess the skills to do. This did help inspire the colors I used in our bathroom remodel, though! I really connected to the method Fariha used to build the coffee table--wooden dowels. What a fabulous idea!
