Weekend Laundry Room Makeover

Apr 27, 2020
I had been itching to do something to my laundry room for months, toying with the idea of simply painting it white, but the snowball effect completely took over and turned into multiple project! One thing leads to another, doesn’t it? This easy weekend laundry room makeover was such a satisfying project!
I decided I would paint over our existing blue paint. I didn’t hate the color, I just didn’t love it. It ended up blue because I had a gallon of blue and orange we didn’t end up using with our home renovation and I didn’t want it to go to waste. So, blue it was. The whole-house renovation exhausted us and we were up to our eyeballs with trying to get our kitchen ready to move in, and I didn’t care too much about the color of the laundry room at the time.

Everything seemed so messy when you entered the room, and I wanted to to be less visually cluttered. I installed floating shelves when we moved in, but they weren’t as useful as I’d hoped, so that was another reason for the update. Oh, and the washer and dryer hookup does not have a cover. We think we have finally tracked one down through our plumber–it’s just not screwed on yet. We ordered two that didn’t fit, since ours somehow got thrown away in the middle of renovation. I feel a little like Indiana Jones trying to locate this treasure.

Paint

I painted all the walls Sherwin Williams Pure White. It was between that and Alabaster that Chris Loves Julia just used. It’s probably not actually pure white and that’s just the name of the color! I just liked the stark white for the laundry room. Our kitchen cabinets are also bright white (not creamy), so it seemed like a good choice, since it’s right beside them. My other favorite white is SW Dover White that we used on our fireplace.

Shiplap Wall

Our laundry room was the perfect place to try a shiplap wall. The walls were not perfect from removing wallpaper, so I didn’t feel too bad about covering up perfectly good drywall.

Since I wanted to do this project myself, without hiring a pro, my options were more limited with the shiplap application. I don’t have or know how to operate a saw and don’t feel comfortable nailing boards correctly onto the wall, so got creative.

We used peel-and-stick vinyl tile to create faux shiplap and it couldn’t have been easier! You can read all about the process in this post.

I wanted to paint the shiplap wall black (also complementing our black and white kitchen cabinets), and chose Sherwin Williams Black Magic. I love it pops and how real the shiplap looks under the black paint.

Mudcloth Accent Wall

I didn’t decide to do this accent wall until I had already started the shiplap, and the idea was stuck in my head once I saw Simple Life Pastor’s Wife post about using these modern wallpaper stencils by Cutting Edge Stencils. I did it by hand to save money, since I already had the paint in-hand and it was a relatively small area.

After looking for inspiration photos online, I created my own pattern. I went with a black pattern on the white wall near the garage door and I love how it turned out. It was so much fun to create this mudcloth accent wall and it totally looks like wallpaper. I’m already thinking of how I can do something similar in another area of our house.

Shelving

I bought some black wrought iron shelf brackets at Hobby Lobby to mount to the wall behind the washer and dryer. They will hold a 12″ board, so they should provide better storage for all my laundry items.

Accessories

I love my huge framed wipe-off board on the black wall. It has a nice contrast against the black shiplap wall and it helps me stay organized by keeping everything in one place. I rehung all our baskets and storage items on the walls. We use white coat hooks for storage of jackets and shoes behind the door.

I did spray paint our hanging wall baskets gold, along with my W A S H letters on the wall. I liked how it kept things cohesive and the gold is such a fun accent.

For the rest of the wall art, I just pulled things from my personal collection, that fit the color scheme. And, of course, I fit in a couple cactus prints, since I am crazy for them.

Easy Weekend Makeover

One person could easily complete every part of this makeover over a weekend. The painting really brightened things up; the shiplap wall would fool anyone, and the mudcloth accent wall may be my favorite part! I’m so excited to have our laundry space be so beautiful, since so many people walk through and I spend so much time here! Please use #greysnailmakes if you are inspired to try any of these projects when you share your photos so I can check it out.

I can't remember the first example of fluted wood furniture I saw, but it was probably either this gorgeous custom wood bathroom vanity from Chris Loves Julia , or the DIY fluted coffee table Fariha shared on Pennies for a Fortune . The custom cabinetry was done professionally using a router for each line, which isn't something I possess the skills to do. This did help inspire the colors I used in our bathroom remodel, though! I really connected to the method Fariha used to build the coffee table--wooden dowels. What a fabulous idea!

I did a little refresh in our daughter's room, and I decided we needed some large-scale art. I actually planned to order a print, but inspiration struck on a trip to HomeGoods when I saw two HUGE framed canvases on clearance for $25 and $9. I grabbed them up and headed home, with my head filled with ideas on what to do with them.

I love peel-and-stick wallpaper so much! It's an easy, DIY fix for any space that just needs a little refresh. Because it's easily removeable, I feel much more confident going ahead and choosing a pattern. I struggle to commit to traditional pasted wallpaper--I think it's because we removed so much of it when we bought our house. It is no easy task. Peel-and-stick is also very economical, so if you decide to change it up a few years down the line, it doesn't feel so bad. I've now put it in four areas of our house. Today, you'll see the kitchen and den. It's the same pattern in different colors. I love how much the simple pattern really just makes each space.

Just for fun, here's a freebie--a digital download for some fall wall art! This quote is from Anne of Green Gables. I still want to read the book, but I was a huge fan of the series Anne with an E on Netflix. Just click on the file, download it and print it at home or send it to a place like Office Depot. Happy October!
